Alone in London

Created by Charlotte 3 years ago
I moved to the UK by myself on a whim in 2014 having never been here before and not knowing a single person. I remember thinking on my first night in Camden that I could disappear that night and no one would know. I didnt need to worry long though, I met Charlie in the lobby of our building the next day and the rest is history. Charlie and I explored Camden together before eventually finding the pub you could find us in most nights. When I got my first job in London, Charlie was there on my first day for pints after work. When Charlie wanted to go to the pub instead of doing homework, I sat in front of his door making sure he finished everything before we went out and he hated that. Every new song he wrote he came down to show me and every weird work story I had I stopped off in his room to tell him on my way home. When Charlie left London he gave me his notebook of songs as a leaving gift. I found it the other day with a note in the back I hadnt seen before, signed 'from the one who got away'. An inside joke that became true in a different, awful way. Every time Charlie was in the area he came to see me, often to drag me along to events and make sure I was living life to the fullest. Every time he came with new stories and big adventures because if there was one thing Charlie definitely did, it was live it up. I've never known someone like him. He loved so quickly and so easily (and not just because he told us every day about a girl he was in love with after seeing one walk by). He was loyal to a fault and would go to the ends of the earth for a friend or a stranger - particularly if what was needed was some cheeky entertainment. He taught me all about British culture and was the first to introduce me to the expression 'thick as pig shit' which I still dont fully understand but is nonetheless hilarious. I will miss Charlie always but I am so grateful that I had him in my life. London was supposed to be an 8 month stopover, but Charlie forced me to make friends, explore, and love it and I'm still here 7 years later (and a recent British citizen!) because of him.
